On a recent Saturday, several dozen residents of Park Delta Bay and the Delta Bay Marina enjoyed the fruits of a hand-picked harvest courtesy of two lovely ladies from the Consumnes River Farm. On the Marina deck with the shimmer of the spring sun on the San Joaquin, the taste of the vine seemed even smoother.
The family operation began with specialty olive oils and vinegars in 2006. The fourth generation grape farm added its own wines in 2014, having previously sold their grapes to other wine-producers in the region. With one hundred acres, including its own eighty-five year-old old vines for the production of Old Vine Zin, Consumnes River Farms can focus on excellence in every bottle.
The facility sports a premier tasting room, in which Club members gather for their quartlerly “pick-up” parties. Casual visitors can learn about the unique oils and vinegars offered by the establishment or enjoy the comforts of the room for private gatherings. All sales are handled out of the tasting room, where staff can explain the varieties and suggest ideal food pairings.
The name of the Farm derives from the nearby Cosumnes River, with a deliberate twist on the word “consume” to emphasis the virtues of the vineyard’s wine as an accompaniment to a meal. While pouring at the Marina, Victoria, niece of the current owners, shared her favorites: The 2015 District 11 Chardonnay and the Cuvee Rouge. “These have a pleasing balance of flavor,” she explained. “They pair well with a variety of dishes.”
Owners Jackie and Ken take great pride in the wines, oils, and vinegars offered by this boutique establishment. With concern for their customers and pride in their product, the Consumnes River Farms showcases the best of Lodi wines.
The second-Saturday wine-tasting continues in June at the Delta Bay Marina, while down at the park on the same day, an RV & Boat Maintenance Event takes place under the big tent. Come on out to the California Delta Loop! There’s something for everyone!
