The Delta Bay Foundation, a California 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, started the Sunday Market last summer to give Delta area artists and creatives a venue at which to safely sell their wares. Held last summer in July and August, the Sunday Market found favor on the Delta Loop with locals and visitors. The Sunday Market also got to host a Harvest Market before the public health rules forced a close-down. UNTIL NOW!

At present, six vendors have committed to participate in the Spring Market and several more will hopefully join Market Row. The Foundation has acquired a long blue tent which will allow all of the vendors be centrally located in the beautiful meadow in the communal area of Park Delta Bay. Additionally, the River Delta Fire District will be on hand to present a family-friendly safety program. Attendance is free! Some food and beverage offerings will be available for a donation. Most of the vendors are “cash only”, though some take Apple Pay or Venmo.

Here is a preview of some of the vendors whose wares you will be thrilled to peruse!

Barbara Estlack-Brock collects, curates, and sells lovely china, glass, stoneware, and other cherished items from tables and china cabinets of days gone by as “Out Of The Past“. A tiny, fiesty lady, Estlack-Brock sparkles and smiles when she talks about her treasures. Rumor has it that she’s having a Spring Sale! Her table glitters with lovely items and her extensive inventory might well hold a few pieces to complete your own tablescape for Easter or make an inspired purchase for Mother’s Day gifting!

Estlack-Brock lives in Vieira’s Resort with her son Bernie Edens and daughter-in-law Trinity Edens. Trinity, an accomplished crocheter, also sells at the Market with her adorable Co-Z-Me array of hats, trinket travel boxes, potholders, and wash cloths. Trinity might well put a little crochet heart in your hand when you browse her table! Trinity Edens is also an independent Mary Kay Representative so don’t be surpirsed if your purchase comes with a little free sample!

Many of the vendors at the Market make the items which they sell.

Mellissa Stolte, one of the members of the Tiny House section at Park Delta Bay, makes and sells Lavender Lovelies — hand cream, infused oils, hand sanitizers, sachets and other delights fragranced with the beautiful scent of local lavender. Stolte plans a new array of lovely soaps and other fancy items which you can tuck into an Easter basket or a Mother’s Day package for your favorite lady! Stolte’s goods found great favor at last summer’s Sunday Market, so be sure to visit her table early as they sell out very quickly!

Everyone loves to see the Delta dawn shining through stained glass reflecting its colors on your kitchen wall! Tracy Holcombe designs and makes stained glass hearts, dragon flies, suns, and other pretty baubles. They can hang from a chain or wire, or stick to the window with a clever suction cup. Dangle them from your rear view mirror or the light pull on your ceiling fan! “Kiss My Glass” has something for everyone, reasonably priced and pretty!

Holcombe lives in the loop and travels to the Market in her very own amazing cart, so watch for her set-up and ask about special orders, which she has been to be persuaded to take.

No Market event would be complete without Robin Pack’s “Tiny Bakeshop”. Pack is a home baker who has turned her hobby into a delicious boon for her friends and neighbors. Cakes, pies, muffins, and more delight Market customers! Pack also lives in the Tiny House community at Park Delta Bay. She is a retired teacher from Marin County with a sparkling smile. Her offerings change every week but she is sure to have something special for spring!

Other vendors include Kristi South, of Studio South with spectacular pottery; Rachel Warren of Magic Alchemy Design who will be selling her own jewelry, cards, and painted glass objects d’art; and Pattie Whitaker, unveiling a new line of spring crafts as “Pattie’s Pretties”. Miss Pattie was the summer grill master and we’re hoping she’ll reprise that talent as well! The ladies of the park who had the ice cream stand last summer will be on hand with lemonade, ice tea, and bottled water. Melissa Fink returns with her Delta Driftwood Designs, lovely jewelry, painted rocks, driftwoods signs, and custom driftwood art.

The River Delta Fire District will be on hand with the men and women first responders who protect us every day with their bravery and skill. They will present a family-friendly safety program. Bring your kids to meet the Fire Fighters on whom we all depend every fire season here in Northern California!

The Sunday Market reprises its popular “farmer’s market” theme for local artists, artisans, crafters, & creators with its first Holiday Market on Sunday, December 13th, 2020, from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Delta Bay Foundation, the Holiday Market will again be hosted at Park Delta Bay, which allows the Foundation to use its communal areas for Foundation events.

During last summer’s Sunday Market, sponsors, vendors, and volunteers introduced a unique raffle Customers received a raffle ticket for each purchase. Drawings provided a chance for “Market Money”, good for purchases at the following week’s Sunday Market. At the Harvest Market, the raffle morphed into surprise wins, with the lucky customer selecting from one of many donated prizes.

In the spirit of the season, the Sunday Market has devised a unique giving opportunity and a chance to win one of our donated prizes as a reward for your generosity. The Sunday Market asks that its customers donate a new, unwrapped children’s gift. The donations can be warm outer wear such as hats, scarves, or gloves; books; or toys. Each donation nets the giver a raffle ticket. This ticket can then be placed in a bucket in front of the gift for which you yearn! Donated gifts including local wines, creations by each vendor, and household decor will be staged for your viewing. Select the item you might like to have, write your name, phone number, and e-mail address on the raffle ticket, and drop the ticket in the raffle bucket in front of the item you want! At the day’s end, the Grace Is The Key representative will draw a winner from each bucket, and the winner will be notified. Winners will have until close of business on Monday, December 14th, to make arrangements to claim their prize. Unclaimed prizes will go to the next-drawn ticket.

Grace Is The Key serves families in the Modesto, California area. Founded as a not-for-profit in 2017 by Kimberly Dias Martinez, Grace Is The Key “provid[es] nutritious meals to anyone in need. This includes homeless people of all ages, as well as individuals and families who may be down on their luck and in need of some extra assistance.” Volunteers bring trailers to a Modesto-area park every Wednesday, filled with gently loved clothes, shoes, blankets and socks. They also provide first aid supplies, health and hygiene items, food, love and prayers for the less fortunate. A faith-based program, Grace Is The Key nonetheless welcomes all families who seek their assistance, and all volunteers and donors wishing to participate in the humane work of the program.

Though the current pandemic required suspending the weekly park events, Grace Is The Key nonetheless has done what it could to help the families which it serves. The presents which Holiday Market customers donate will be part of the Christmas In The Park celebration. The new, unwrapped children’s gifts will be lovingly wrapped and allocated along with the presents gifted by community members (including many Park Delta Bay residents) who have adopted specific children served by Grace Is The Key.

The Foundation chose Grace Is The Key as this year’s charity to highlight at the Holiday Market because its founder is the daughter of Wayne and Jerri Dias, park residents and purveyors of the drinks-and-desserts booth at the Sunday Market. Wayne, Jerri, and their neighbor and friend Carol McClary will have a hot-drinks booth at the Holiday Market to warm your bones as you shop the Market.

The Sunday Market’s Holiday Market brings you many of the same vendors from this summer’s Market Row. Robin Pack returns with her Tiny Bakeshop. Pattie Whitaker will be serving something from the stove top, since her grill is stored away for the winter. She’ll also sell her sweet bracelets. Melissa Stolte’s Lavender Lovelies make excellent gifts or a treat for yourself! Browse these and so many more locally-made unique treasures: Light-catching stained glass by Tracy Holcombe; jewelry, painted rocks, and driftwood signs by Melissa Fink; objects d’art and hand-crafted jewelry from Rachel Warren; seasonal decor from Ruth Crisantos; Co-Z coasters and cloths by Trinity Edens; hand-made cards created by Laurie Price; and specialty gifts by our favorite marina girl, Samm Bales. We’ll also see some amazing hand-polished stones from Arizona, gathered, curated, and sold by Ray Lahti. These make excellent purchases for yourself or a friend to display in a glass vessel or dish. Alex Loesch will sketch you and your group for a small fee, and your dog for free! His pencil creations can later adorn your mantle! The women of Silo Farm Organics will also be on hand with their winter harvest!

The Holiday Market takes place in the common area at Park Delta Bay. Costumers will first have a chance to visit with the folks from Grace Is The Key, who will gratefully receive your donated gift and tender your raffle ticket. Select the gift on which you want to take your chance, drop your ticket, then head down the sidewalk to visit the vendors! On the covered sidewalk and in an adjacent covered tent, the vendors will display their wares for your viewing and buying pleasure! A small number of vendors will also be staged in the community room, entered through a backdoor at the end of the sale tent. The easy circular flow allows for proper physical distancing in keeping with state and county Covid-19 orders. Customers and vendors will be asked to wear face coverings while interacting from less than six feet and when standing in groups which include persons not of their household.

The Holiday Market expects a visit from St. Nick, if he can take time from his North Pole duties. Also expected are the men and women of the River Delta Fire District, who will stop by to say hello if not needed elsewhere. The community so appreciates what our first-responders do, so please tell them “Thank you!” any chance you get!

The Sunday Market Vendors and Volunteers look forward to their first Holiday Market, and to receiving your donated gifts for Grace Is The Key. Come enjoy a hot drink, a delicious baked item, and some delicious food while exploring the local creations on offer! Don’t miss this delightful event, right here on the California Delta Loop! See you soon! Happy Holidays!

The Vendors of the Sunday Market: A Snapshot! https://deltabay.org/the-vendors-of-the-sunday-market-a-snapshot/ https://deltabay.org/the-vendors-of-the-sunday-market-a-snapshot/#respond Sun, 04 Oct 2020 19:42:26 +0000 https://deltabay.org/?p=2032 Read More]]> The Sunday Market’s Harvest Market takes place one week from today, on October 11th, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Harvest Market features most of the vendors of this summer’s Sunday Market with several new exhibitors. To enrich your Market experience, here’s a list of the participants with a description of what each has sold in the past or indicates they will be selling at the Harvest Market. Please note, occasionally vendors cannot attend a scheduled market, so please visit another booth if the vendor for whom you are looking isn’t present!

Starting with the first person whom you’ll see adjacent to the parking lot, and moving along Market Row, here are the vendors and their offerings:

Pattie Whitaker does double-duty at the Market, in addition to being one of the organizers and idea-makers behind the Market itself. You’ll first encounter her at the Grill Station. For the Harvest Market, Miss Pattie plans her famous burgers and hot dogs, but also will be offering chili to enjoy with cornbread or a-top your burger or dog!

Pattie also makes and sells lovely bracelets, which you’ll find at the table with Melissa Stolte’s Lavender Lovelies, mentioned later.

Miss Carol and Miss Jeri, along with Jeri’s husband Wayne, had the ice cream and drinks stand all summer. They currently plan corn-on-the-cob, churros, and cold drinks which will nicely complement your plate from the Grill Station!

The mother and daughter pair of Alice and Jenn from Silo Farm Organics return with their beautiful offerings. Silo Farm Organics will also supply pumpkins for purchase and painting — assuming they have some left from their marvelous produce stand, available every day in Walnut Grove!

Helix Mosley-Darrieusset creates amazing chain-mail bracelets and necklaces from a gorgeous array of colors. Choose one pre-made or order your perfect combination for later pick-up! He’ll often be assisted by his husband Louis Mosley-Darrieusset, who also helps out at the Grill Station.

Melissa Stolte’s hand-made lavender soaps, oils, sachets, and candles make thoughtful gifts for a special someone or a treat for yourself! They sell out fast, so make an early stop at the Lavender Lovelies!

At the same table, you’ll find Pattie Whitaker’s hand-strung bead bracelets.

These charming trinkets look perfect stacked or solo, and the color choices and low price mean you can coordinate any outfit with a Pattie Whitaker original!

By far the most popular booth at the Market is Robin Pack’s Tiny Bakeshop. The delicious offerings from this home baker include breads, pies, and pastries made using local fruits and house-grown herbs. Robin Pack has been baking for most of her life, though she also spent decades as a teacher. We sincerely hope she decides to go into business as a “real” baker, but in the meantime, she delights her customers with her home-baked goodies!

Unless he makes the final round in a competition the prior day, Aubrey Campbell returns with his Antiques and Old Stuff, from his store where he sells. . . well, antiques and old stuff! Also a deft knife-sharpener and wood worker, Campbell sells everything from baubles and beads to toy cars to what one customer called “guy stuff”! We wish him well at his shooting competition and don’t want him to lose, but we’d love to see him on Market Row!

Melissa Fink might be the most versatile creative to participate in the Market. She makes beads, creates jewelry, paints rocks, and fabricates signs from driftwood! She works while the Market customers mill around her, and more than one customer has snagged a newly-strung bracelet right as she ties the last knot!

Next door to Melissa Fink, Tracy Holcombe cracks jokes and sells her lovely stained glass pieces. They glitter in the sunshine hanging from hook or suction cup. At the reasonable prices, you can collect several styles!

Michael Allen displays and sells original artwork by his sister, Angela Sims. The Market adores Mr. Michael with his ready smile and winning personality! But we also like the powerful work of his talented sister. Browse through the unique offerings and find something to brighten your living space or adorn the walls of your office!

Melanie Lewis makes lovely crib and receiving blankets, shawls, and larger knit and crochet items. She’s spent her lockdown working with yarn leftover from projects finished over the years, with her special talent for color combination. You won’t want to miss her table! She has beautiful potholders and coasters individually or in gift sets just in time for the holidays!

Just in time for the cold weather, Anna Martin brings her hand-crocheted beanies and scarves to the Market. Martin will share space with Melanie Lewis. Her adorable beanies come in a variety of fall and winter colors and range in size from infant to adult. Come see such delights as the Whale’s Tale, Snuggly Bunny, and Candy Corn Beanies along with the Lazy Days beanie and scarf sets. You’ll want to get one for yourself, your children, and all your besties!

Trinity Edens presents the cutest little CoZ hand-crocheted items! Little holders, travel packs, tiny hearts — adorable! She also staffs the table at which her husband Bernie sells the collectible items that his mother has found in her travels and forays into flea markets and estate sales. If you’re looking for a new Mary Kay rep, Trinity can help you out there, too!

New to the Market, Rachel Warren designs “objects d’art” with a Dia de Muerte theme. Glasses, trivets, trinkets, and baubles all carry the unique and specific celebration of the Day of the Dead. Timely and clever!

Also a first-time vendor, Ruth Crisantos has got you covered with holiday-themed ornaments! Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas sparkle from her varied and clever hand-painted and crafted baubles!

Rounding out Market Row, Kristi South hales from the Stockton area but currently calls Utah home. She’d like to move back, and has scheduled a visit to family coinciding with our Market in order to display and sell her one-of-a-kind pottery!

We’ll also have the Pop-Up Rest-Stop, though we won’t, alas, have our normal entertainment as Josh Jakubowski headed for Idaho since our last summer market. But Miss Tammy, a Park resident and para-professional in a local school district, will be hosting children’s activities in the meadow! Who knows what else might evolve! We can’t wait for next Sunday and the Harvest Market! We hope you join us!

The Sunday Market is sponsored by the Delta Bay Foundation, a 501(c)(3) California not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion of the California Delta, its people, and its environment. The Foundation is grateful to the owners and management of Park Delta Bay for allowing us to host the Sunday Market on its grounds. Neither the Delta Bay Foundation, Park Delta Bay, nor any of the vendors accept responsibility for your safety while attending the Sunday Market or the Harvest Market. Please respect social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines of the state of California and Sacramento County while attending the Market. Thank you.

Sunday Market’s Harvest Market – October 11, 2020 – 11am to 3pm! https://deltabay.org/sunday-markets-harvest-market-october-11-2020-11am-to-3pm/ https://deltabay.org/sunday-markets-harvest-market-october-11-2020-11am-to-3pm/#respond Mon, 28 Sep 2020 01:36:37 +0000 https://deltabay.org/?p=2021 Read More]]> Just two weeks until the Sunday Market’s premier “Harvest Market”! Mark your calendars: Sunday, October 11th, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Park Delta Bay!

Most of the summer’s vendors will be returning. We also proudly announce three new vendors, Ruth Crisantos, Rachel Warren, and Kristi South! Each has unique and lovely craft or ceramic ware for holiday gift-giving or home decorating!

Kristi South makes Utah home these days, but has her roots in Stockton.

Intrigued by the Sunday Market, South has scheduled a trip to the area coinciding with our Harvest Market. She makes “fun and functional” pottery and should make a gleeful addition to market row! Check her out in Facebook here. Peruse her studio page here. South hopes to resettle in the Delta — and from what we have seen, she’ll do well as a creative here!

Rachel Warren makes her second appearance as an artist in a venue sponsored by the Delta Bay Foundation. She joined a half-dozen other artists in a holiday show last year which only slightly suffered by a Loop-wide power outage! Her objects d’art focus on Dia de Muertos, the Mexican holiday which honors the dead. Her glassware, tiles, and other creations capture the essence of the holiday in a unique and lively way. Check out her work at her website here. Each piece reflects Warren’s love of glass, painting, and the holiday itself. Her vibrant personality shines through in everything she creates.

Ruth Crisantos claims first-prize as a true Delta gal. She hails from Clarksburg and lives in Ryde.

She makes adorable hand-made trinkets in holiday themes and a variety of styles. This will be Crisantos’ first appearance at the Sunday Market, and we hope she’ll return at future special events and — dare we hope! — next summer’s regular Sunday Market (which we plan for each Sunday in June, July, and August!). One of Crisantos’ ornaments will look lovely on your fall wreath or holiday tree! Buy several to share or decorate every room in your house with a charming original!

The Grill Station

Of course, no Sunday Market would be compete without a stop at Pattie Whitaker’s Grill Station! Ms. Pattie will be offering seasonal fare: Along with her Delta-famous burgers and hot dogs, she’ll have savory chili to enjoy with cornbread or over your sandwich! You do not want to miss this bounty! Stop next at this summer’s “ice cream ladies” table, where fall makes its mark with corn-on-the-cob, churros, and cold drinks! Enjoy your meal under the Pop-Up Rest-Stop!

The Ice Cream Ladies plus one will morph into the “corn and churros” stand for the Harvest Market!

The Pop-Up Rest-Stop provides a cozy place to enjoy your lunch!

Food booths at the Sunday Market are “contribution only”! Give what you think the food & service warrants! The food vendors are park residents who join with the Delta Bay Foundation in welcoming you to our happy home on the Loop!

On Market Row, returning vendors offer stained glass, hand-made jewelry, fabric art, knit and crochet work, and “antiques and old stuff”. One of our most popular tables is that of Robin Pack, a home-baker selling her wares as the Tiny Bakeshop. Focusing on locally sourced fruits and spices, Pack offers fruit pies, brownies, cakes, and rolls. No one regrets the deliciousness of a Tiny Bakeshop treat!

Silo Farm Organics returns to the Market with its heirloom tomatoes and seasonal veggie. They also bring pumpkins, which we’re excited to announce will be available both for purchase and painting! In the children’s area, games and activities will keep the under-12 crew occupied, led by Ms. Tammy, a local area para-professional educator. We even plan a “cupcake walk”, where the kids can pay a small fee to walk the circle and try for a chance to win a treat from the Tiny Bakeshop! We’ll also be featuring new raffles, with prizes donated by some of the vendors on Market Row! Must be present to win! One raffle ticket per purchase at the Market.

Come on out to the Sunday Market’s Harvest Market, and celebrate autumn Delta Style! We hope to see you there!

A few glimpses of the fun this summer at the Sunday Market. Enjoy!

Regular customers of the Sunday Market have had fun participating in our raffle for #MarketMoney. This week, the raffle will have a decidedly different flare. First and second prize will be a whole pie and a whole cake from Robin Pack’s Tiny Bakeshop. Third Prize will be a tray of brownies also from the Tiny Bakeshop. To be entered in the raffle, you must make a purchase from one of the vendors that day, including the Grill Station, the Silo Farm Organics, the ice cream ladies, or any of the vendors on Market Row. All purchases made during the first hour entitle you to a chance at the tray of brownies. All purchases in the second hour give a chance at the whole pie or whole cake, winner’s choice. All purchases made in the third hour go into the drawing for the remaining whole pie or cake. You must be present to win!

Although this is the last regular market, Market Vendors will return on October 11th for the Sunday Market’s Harvest Market. We plan special activities for kids and families centered around the Harvest season, including pumpkins from the Delta Bay Community Garden and from Silo Farm Organics. Check out the Sunday Market’s Harvest Market on Facebook for announcement about scheduled participants. All of the regular season vendors have committed to the event, and more are anticipated so it should be a grand time!

At this week’s Market, browse these fabulous vendors to find gifts for yourself or others, delicious baked goods and organic produce, and food and refreshments to enjoy under the Pop-Up Rest-Stop while you enjoy Josh Jakubowski‘s amazing musical talent. See you at the Sunday Market!

Browse the Market here!

Helix Mosley-Darriuesset debuted at the Market last week with his hand-crafted, custom-designed chain mail bracelets and necklaces. He returns this week ready to take your order! His lovely work has an enduring finish. Choose your favorite combination and place your order at the start of your market visit, and Helix will work to finish the item before the next raffle drawing! He can also place orders for later pick-up or make delivery arrangements.

Of course, no visit to the Sunday Market would be complete without a stop at the Tiny Bakeshop, to visit Robin Pack and select one of her amazing treats! Robin has been baking since childhood and her hobby brings her much delight — and her customers agree! Select for yourself or to gift a friend. Robin also takes orders for future deliveries, so plan your next gathering with the Tiny Bakeshop in mind! Watch the Facebook page for news of this week’s menu!

Everyone knows that Pattie Whitaker and Louis Mosley-Darrieusset tag-team at the grill station, but have you mosied on over to Market Row and browsed Miss Pattie’s lovely little bracelets? They are sure to delight and for the low price that Miss Pattie asks, you can buy several to match your mood or share with your sister!

Towards the end of Market Row, you’ll find Tracy’s Stained glass; Trinity Edens with her beau Bernie selling crocheted items and vintage pieces; Melissa Fink with her hand-made jewelry and driftwood signs, painted rocks, and other decor; Melissa Stolte’s Lavender Lovelies, home-made soaps and other products with local lavender; and Aubrey Campbell with knives, vintage trade beats, knife-sharpening services, and sundry merchandise from his Antiques and Old Things store. Connie Greenwoven will display her hand-sewn marine goods and unique copper jewelry along with jewelry supplies. Michael Allen staffs a booth for his sister, artist Angela Sims, offering original paintings.

Throughout the day, the Grill Station offers burgers and hotdogs, while the Ice Cream ladies have cold drinks and sweets. Josh Jakubowski sets up around noon. The Sunday Market hours are 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are located at 922 West Brannan Island Road, on the California Delta Loop.

See you at the Sunday Market!

The Sunday Market respects social distancing. Vendors strive to sanitize hands and surfaces between customers and where masks when it is not possible to keep a six-foot space. The Grill Station has established protocols for cleaning and safe relay of food to customers. Please maintain social distance with persons outside of your family or cohorts and bring a mask to wear when you cannot socially distance.

The Delta Bay Foundation is a California not-for-profit with 501(c)(3) status. Persons attending the Sunday Market do so at their own risk.

Thank you for your patronage, and don’t forget the Sunday Market’s Harvest Market, Sunday, October 11th, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

See you at the Sunday Market!

The original idea for cooking burgers & dogs on a propane grill came from the market manager and general dogsbody who, it must be said, has not eaten meat in fifty years and never lit a grill in her entire life. Miss Pattie immediately saw the folly of letting such a disaster unfold before the dismayed eyes of the Sunday Market patrons. So first she corralled our favorite Frenchman, Monsieur Louis, and between the two of them, the Grill Station has become a popular stop for Market patrons.

Miss Pattie also sells delightful wares over on Market Row. From her Kettle Corn to her sweet bracelets to the Lavender Lovelies made by her friend, cohort, and neighbor Melissa Stolte, Miss Pattie’s table holds something for nearly everyone. (The Market Manager sports two Pattie Whitaker originals on her left wrist.)

The story of the lovely bracelets brings smiles to everyone who hears it. Though she does not like to boast about her dedication to family, Miss Pattie had the care of her elderly mother who suffered from dementia. Her mother required someone nearby at all times, both for her personal needs and for the emotional support that a calm presence provided. So her devoted daughter started making bracelets. The handiwork offered a calming influence for the aging lady, and produced a unique and gorgeous array of beaded baubles. Reasonably priced, delicate or chunky and colorful, Miss Pattie’s bracelets offer an affordable and stylish gift for yourself or a friend.

While you’re at the table, treat yourself to a freshly popped bag of Kettle Corn from Miss Pattie’s kitchen, and browse Melissa Stolte’s lavender products, the luscious soaps, soothing linen spray, nourishing hand-sanitizer and more. Then, stroll down to the Grill Station and get yourself what has been described as the Best Burger on the Loop! Cheese or not; slices of tomatoes from the produce stand, and your favorite condiment round out your burger or hotdog. Then plop down under the Pop-Up Rest Stop with a cold drink and an ice cream from the Ice Cream Ladies, and listen to Josh Jakubowski “playing real good” though not quite for free — throw some money in the jar!

The Sunday Market has just three more weeks for the 2020 season. It takes place this Sunday, August 16, the 23rd, and the 30th. Market hours are 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. In case of severe heat, market vendors reserve the right to pack up early. Most vendors are cash only. The Market is set up for social distancing. Vendors wear masks during exchanges with customers. Please bring your mask and be prepared to wear it when you cannot maintain six feet between yourself and non-cohorts. The Sunday Market is sponsored and organized by the Delta Bay Foundation, a California 501(c)(3) not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion and preservation of the California Delta. See you at the #SundayMarket!

The Tiny Bakeshop At the Sunday Market https://deltabay.org/the-tiny-bakeshop-at-the-sunday-market/ https://deltabay.org/the-tiny-bakeshop-at-the-sunday-market/#respond Fri, 07 Aug 2020 04:26:42 +0000 https://deltabay.org/?p=1975 Read More]]>

Robin Pack talks with her entire face, animated and happy. Her slight, slender figure holds a powerhouse of energy and enthusiasm. Like her #TinyBakeshop, Robin occupies a small space with a big impact.

“I went tiny because I wanted to surround myself with fewer things and only those which meant a lot to me,” she says. “After years of caring for my mother in a big house with a big yard, I felt as though I had too much stuff.”

Pack describes herself as a home baker.

She brings her hobby to the Sunday Market each week with a beautifully presented table filled with lovely treats made from fresh local fruit, by hand, in the tiny kitchen in her tiny house at Park Delta Bay. “I am not a professional,” she notes. “I’m just providing the fruits of an enjoyable past time, at a modest price to make up for what I spend on the very best ingredients that I can afford.”

Originally from Colorado, Pack moved to California after college to start a thirty-decade teaching career. She laughs as she notes that as a child, she wanted three things: “To take care of babies in the nurseries, to be a baker lady, and to teach kindergarten.” With her two pups Jack and Louie, her long history of teaching little ones, and now her Tiny Bakeshop, she has attained all three of her goals. The joy of accomplishment shines from her eyes as she talks about the “Menu of the Week” or describes baking with her students.

Pack’s love of home-baking started with her sister’s decision that they should go around their neighborhood taking orders for the cinnamon rolls which they made from the Betty Crocker Cookbook for Boys & Girls. “Soon we had orders from twenty-five of our neighbors,” she remembers. “We spent Sunday morning baking cinnamon rolls, then riding around in our mother’s car delivering them.”

Later in life, Pack would take goodies to dinner parties. Working women, with less free time than their stay-at-home cohorts, would ask not for the recipe but the product. She’d make things for their holiday meals or office parties, eventually developing her current habit of finding the freshest local ingredients and seeing what she can make from them. “If I didn’t pick the fruit myself, I got it from the stand up the roadway,” she remarks.

This week’s menu includes apricot and peach mini-pies and her signature Boston Cream pies. The apricots come from a local tree. Organic farmers in the area sometimes give her boxes of fruit from which she creates her delectable wares. She asks $6.00 for the mini-pies, less than she might want if she were running a commercial kitchen, but a fair price, she thinks, for the Sunday Market crowd. She can also take orders, and hopes to continue her home-baking projects with seasonal fare year-round.

Pack mentions that as much as she enjoys living tiny, the kitchen poses a challenge for the serious home baker. “I store my specialty pans in the oven,” she says. “On baking day, everything comes out and it’s a mess. Thankfully, when I finish, it all goes back in its place.”

For Pack, “going tiny” meant a chance to divest herself of an excess of material goods, to reduce her carbon footprint, and to focus on quality rather than quantity. “Everything around me has meaning,” she emphasizes. “Just as I hoped: Fewer things, and only those which pack a punch, in style, in sentiment, and function.”

Pack enjoys the creativity of home-baking. “Bavarian cream, that’s a magical thing,” she explains. “Simple ingredients like milk and eggs with a few strokes become something grand. The ordinary becomes extraordinary.”

Pack brings her signature home-baking to a center table at the #SundayMarket. You can find her menu online each Wednesday evening and order ahead to reserve your selection, or stroll down Market Row and take your chances. But come early! She often sells out by mid-afternoon, and you do not want to miss the wonders of the #TinyBakeshop. So come on out and meet this very special #TinyBakerLady.

Editor’s Note: Robin Pack’s Tiny Bakeshop shares a #SundayMarket spot with Pattie “the Grill Lady” Whitaker’s beautiful bracelets and Melissa Stolte’s Lavender Lovelies, home-made products using fresh lavender.

See you at the #SundayMarket, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. through August 30th.

P.S.: Plans are afoot for a fall reprisal, at which Robin Pack will likely be selling seasonal goods made from local pumpkins.

Our second Sunday Market https://deltabay.org/our-second-sunday-market/ https://deltabay.org/our-second-sunday-market/#respond Thu, 16 Jul 2020 04:02:40 +0000 https://deltabay.org/?p=1967 Read More]]> The summer days grow warm, with the soft Delta winds providing welcome relief as we stroll through the park. The tall old trees provide perfect shelter and shade. Under a row of those trees, each Sunday through August, you can find tables filled with baubles, baked goods, and bounty.

On July 12th, visitors enjoyed the second Sunday Market at Park Delta Bay. With new and returning vendors offering lovely and delectable wares, the Market has proven a popular spot for local residents and vacationers alike.

Members of the community at Park Delta Bay organized a grill station where burgers, hot dogs, chips and bottled water could be had for a donation at your chosen level. Nearby, three ladies who live long-term in RVs at the Park set up an ice cream stand, a welcome treat on a hot summer day. Adjacent to the food at the edge of the meadow, weary shoppers could relax in the Rest Stop, under the shade of a pop-up canopy.

Silo Farm Organics made their debut at the Sunday Market, bringing their gorgeous heirloom tomatoes, veggies, and basil fresh-picked at the crack of dawn. They plan to return each week as long as the Market runs. Robin Pack brought her #TinyBakeshop goods again, attractively presented and luscious. Come early next week — the crisps go fast! Connie GreenWoven showed her jewelry for the first time and enjoyed herself so much she plans to become a regular vendor. Also selling for the second weekend, Tracy Holcombe displayed delicate stained glass pieces which twirled and sparkled in the sunshine. Tracy lives next door and will continue to anchor Market Row with her beautiful display.

We had a guest appearance from the lively Miss Maggie and her gentle sister Mary, featuring hand-knit wash clothes and kitchen towels. They travel during the summer and were Yosemite bound, but we hope to see them back before too long. Melissa Fink again brought her hand-fashioned bracelets and necklaces, painted rocks, and driftwood signs. Her clever designs found favor, especially with a certain little boy who came with Nana Robin and Poppa Don.

Everyone enjoyed live entertainment from the incomparable Josh Jakubowski, who will be serenading us each week at the Market. We certainly hope to hear more from him — a new record, perhaps?

The Sunday Market at Park Delta Bay continues each week through August. All the vendors who attended for the second week will return on the 19th of July, and Melanie Lewis makes the journey from Manteca again with her hand-fabricated baby blankets, shawls, and receiving blankets.

Come on out, Noon to 4:00 p.m.! See you next week, at the Sunday Market!

Please enjoy a pictorial recap of the second #SundayMarket!

Please note: The Sunday Market is set up for social distancing. Visitors are asked to bring face coverings and wear them when interacting with persons not of your household if you cannot maintain a 6-foot physical distance. Vendors disinfect their stations and have masks to wear when conducting transactions. The volunteer grill station and ice cream booth attendees clean before and after customers and use face coverings during sales. Even though the Sunday Market is outdoors, we follow and honor the state and local guidelines or mandates to the extent that they apply to outdoor markets; and ask that our visitors refrain from attending if they or someone in their circle have tested positive for or have symptoms of the novel corona virus or CoVID-19. Thank you!

Sunday Market Launch! https://deltabay.org/sunday-market-launch/ https://deltabay.org/sunday-market-launch/#respond Tue, 07 Jul 2020 05:02:42 +0000 https://deltabay.org/?p=1941 Read More]]> Nothing says “Sunday” like a stroll down the charming row of an outdoor market!

On Sunday, July 05th, the Delta Bay Foundation sponsored the inaugural “Sunday Market” on the grounds of Park Delta Bay. Set beneath the towering old trees in the park’s common meadow next to the clubhouse, tennis courts, and pool, a gravel road along a strip of marina parking provided the perfect place for visitors to peruse the wares.

Vendors ranged from a local stained glass artist to a knitter who presented beautiful baby blankets and shawls.

Robin Pack (l) and her cohort and friend, Pattie Whitaker.

Robin Pack showcased shortbreads, brownies, crisps made from local fruit, and more. Pack is an online baker who lives in the tiny house community at Park Delta Bay. Pack’s business is “Love By The Dozens“. Pack, a retired teacher who moved to the Delta from Marin County, delighted customers with her impeccable tiny-house-baked goods. She also does online ordering for delivery. Pack specializes in fresh ingredients, including herbs grown in her tiny garden and local fruit from surrounding merchants. “I want my customers to know what you can do with in-season produce,” she explains.

Pattie Whitaker showcases lavender delights by Melissa Stolte.

Displayed with Robin Pack’s baked goods, the lavender-scented and infused products of Melissa Stolte made a refreshing addition to the Sunday Market fare. Stolte makes lavender candles, lip balm, soaps, and even hand-sanitizer. The delicate fragrance soothes under a pillow as a sachet, or in the home by way of a lit candle. Pack, Whitaker, and Stolte live just steps from each other at Park Delta Bay. They combined their creative energies to build a beautiful display. (Rumor has it that Whitaker might reprise her lovely hand-strung bead bracelets for future Sunday Markets!)

The abundance of creativity in the Delta also finds a home next door to Park Delta Bay at Sprindrift, where Tracy Holcomb lives and makes her gorgeous stained glass pieces. Holcomb recently taught herself stained glass work but showed herself to be an adept creator. Her pieces sparkled in the Delta sunshine. The eye-catching moons, hearts, dragonflies, and feathers twirled in the afternoon breeze. Holcomb’s pieces found an eager fan-base at the Sunday Market, selling so rapidly that her supply dwindled by late afternoon.

“I know what I’ll be doing for the next week,” she laughed. We certainly hope she meant making more stained glass!

One of the more unique displays came down from Marin County. Michelle Oga makes doggie accessories such as collar bandannas, and puppy-themed items for dog-owners. Her masks and hand-sanitizer cases coordinated with the little scarves for cute canine critters. Oga works as an admin at the Marin County Shelter, where she deletes in matching dogs to new homes.

“It’s gotten challenging in this pandemic,” she noted. Oga was joined by her mother, who helps makes the totes and other fabric creations. Oga will likely be returning to the Sunday Market for the first Sunday of the month, since she comes a bit farther to participate. Though a Marin County native, Oga has roots in the Delta: her father hails from Lodi and spent the afternoon visiting his family there while Oga sold her wares at our Sunday Market. We hope she returns!

We found jewelry and driftwood-art creator Melissa Fink working part-time at Delta Bay Kayaking, headquartered for the first time this summer at our own Delta Bay Marina. A quiet lady with a lovely smile, Fink spent the day making new creations (one of which might have gotten scooped up by the park’s roving reporter). Her clever and innovative signage and beautiful beads make welcome gifts or a delightful treat for yourself. Visitors and vendors alike marveled at her painted rocks, pendants made from pine-cones, and hand-fired beads. Fink will return to the Sunday Market in coming weeks.

Rounding out the line-up of vendors this past Sunday, Melanie Azevedo Lewis brought delicate hand-crocheted baby blankets and knitted shawls. “I made them from scrap wool, all during the lockdown period,” she explained. Azevedo Lewis spent her last two decades of work as an administrative assistant to the Chief of Police in Manteca, where she lives. She talked about the knack of color combination and pointed to unique patterns which just seemed to work. (It’s entirely possible that your roving reporter might also have bought a shawl to add to her collection.) The machine-wash, low-temp-dry acrylic yarn felt like silk or wool. Her baby blankets would make beautiful gifts for parents-to-be, so we hope she has more scraps and (dare we say it?) that she has to stay home just a little bit longer to make sure she has more inventory for a future Sunday Market! Azevedo Lewis will likely return on the first Sunday of the month.

We cannot recap our first Sunday Market experience without mentioning our local first responders from the River Delta Fire District. On hand to meet the citizens whom they serve and entertain the children, these brave men and women warmed our hearts with their humble natures and sunny smiles! We are all grateful for their service and doubly thankful that they brought their rigs to display at the Sunday Market! Watch for news of an upcoming fundraiser which we hope to organize for this wonderful service to our community and the firefighters to whom we owe so much! Having them on hand perfectly rounded out our first #SundayMarket. We expect them back on the first Sunday in August.

The River Delta Fire District Sunday Crew

The Sunday Market is planned for every Sunday in July and August. It will be held at Park Delta Bay RV and Tiny House Resort, Sundays from Noon to 4:00 p.m. Watch the Delta Bay Foundation and Park Delta Bay Facebook pages for updates; and follow Sunday Market on Facebook.

Marina Life: Delta Kayak Rentals https://deltabay.org/marina-life-delta-kayak-rentals/ https://deltabay.org/marina-life-delta-kayak-rentals/#respond Sun, 21 Jun 2020 23:36:39 +0000 https://deltabay.org/?p=1931 Read More]]>

Susie and Melissa stand ready to help their customers settle into one of their six double or eight single kayaks. Delta Kayak Rentals might be new to the Delta Bay Marina but owner Susie is a veteran on the California Delta Loop. Doing business for the last eight years as Kokopelli Kayak Rentals, Susie brought her business to the Delta Bay Marina in February of 2020.

On Father’s Day, I met a family from San Bruno which came to the Delta in search of tiny houses and kayaks. With a tiny house community on one side of the road and Delta Bay Kayak Rental on the other, they found both at Park Delta Bay. Kim, the mother of four young adults, introduced her husband Chris, and daughters Alix, Graycen, and Tessa. Son Brennan and Alix’s boyfriend Ryan rounded out the crew. All acknowledged themselves to be experienced kayakers. They lunched on the open patio, in the shade but near enough to sunshine for a lazy Sunday afternon.

While the East Bay crew dined, local boys Chase and Seth, down from Antelope, settled up with Susie and headed out to the water. “I’ve come down most summers with my family,” Chase noted. “We rented from Susie at the Lighthouse and followed her when she moved here.” He and his friend donned approved masks while they paid, on sale at the counter for those who have come without. Susie noted that her business follows all Sacramento County and California state orders for the safety of their staff and customers. In addition to the current rules requiring masks while dockside and enforcing social distancing, everyone gets a life jacket. Kids 12 and under are required by state law to wear them. Anyone older than 12 is encouraged to don a jacket before they head out.

“We know what the river can do,” Suzie notes. “Safety first.” She casts an experienced eye over Chris, Kim, and their crew as each settles into a kayak. She sends one of them back for a life jacket. Melissa and she steady the boats and had out oars. They linger on the dock as each kayak heads into the river. When asked how far her customers usually travel, she thinks a minute. “I’ve known a few to go to Walnut Grove,” she acknowledges. “Many head as far as Korth’s”, a marina two miles from Delta Bay.

Kayaks rent for $15.00/hour for the single and $20/hour for the double. If you rent for three hours, your fourth hour comes free. Grab a punch card at the counter and your sixth rental is on Susie! You can reserve your kayaks online with their handy reservation system.

Delta Bay Kayak Rental will be at the marina all summer. Starting on June 24th, paddleboarding returns to the Marina; and wine-tastings begin on the second Saturday in July. After a long spring stuck inside, it’s full-speed ahead at the Delta Bay Marina! So come aboard! We’ll be waiting for you!
